Dr. Gardner IHA 2020 Excellence in Medicine Award
September 22, 2020
The Idaho Hospital Association recently named Dr. Samuel Gardner the recipient of the 2020 Excellence in Medicine Award for his outstanding dedication and care for those in Lemhi County.
Dr. Gardner epitomizes the rural family doctor, providing care in the ER, in the clinic and even making house calls when needed. There aren’t many in Salmon who haven’t met him sometime during the last 23 years. It’s not the number of years that makes him an outstanding doctor worthy of recognition, but his commitment to his community and patients.
IHA is honored to recognize Dr. Gardner who demonstrates an unwavering commitment to service, community involvement, clinical excellence, altruism and leadership with this statewide award. It isn’t easy to embrace the life of a rural physician, but Dr. Gardner has done so with a devotion that is appreciated by his colleagues and community.
After finishing his residency, Dr. Gardner opted to choose a location to practice where he could spend his entire career serving the community he and his family would live. Salmon residents continue to benefit from this career defining decision. Being a doctor in the most rural hospital in the lower 48 states is not without its hurdles. Often, Dr. Gardner has had the challenge of being the only physician to take call and be there when patients need him most. He has taken many leadership roles and served as a teacher and mentor for upcoming physician assistants and nurse practitioners. He has sacrificed time with his family to make sure patients have the care they need.
Despite these trials as well as his own health challenges, Dr. Gardner’s positive attitude and love for his patients is one of his most defining characteristics. When presenting the award, Idaho Governor Brad Little noted, “As a rural physician, Dr. Gardner just quietly takes care of his patients, his clinic, his hospital, his whole community. He’s the kind of country doc that is loved by everyone in the community.”
IHA is grateful to be able to recognize Dr. Gardner for the care and commitment he brings to Steele Memorial and Salmon.
