What is Mohs Surgery?
Mohs micrographic surgery is a specialized surgical technique used to treat specific types of skin cancer, including basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and select early-stage melanomas. This procedure allows for the careful and precise removal of cancerous tissue while preserving as much surrounding healthy skin as possible. By examining the tissue layer by layer during the procedure, Mohs surgery ensures complete cancer removal with minimal impact on nearby healthy tissue, making it especially valuable for areas where cosmetic or functional outcomes are important.
Benefits of Mohs Surgery:
-
Highest cure rate (up to 99%) for many common skin cancers
-
Minimally invasive, outpatient procedure with local anesthesia
-
Immediate pathology review, allowing for same-day confirmation of clear margins
-
Preserves healthy tissue, making it ideal for areas where cosmetic outcomes are important (e.g., face, ears, hands)
-
Lower recurrence rates compared to other treatments
Steele Memorial Medical Center is proud to offer this advanced procedure locally, so you don’t need to travel for the best skin cancer care.
